Antioxidants protect your body against so called 'free radicals' and other harmful substances that are released in the body as a result of all kinds of oxidation reactions. So called oxidative species are released during the release of energy from nutrients but they are also present in sigaret smoke and polluted air. Also, in certain disease processes, such as inflammatory reactions, a lot of free radicals can be formed. If they are not eliminated in due time, free radicals can cause damage to body cells. In this way they may play an important role in the aging process and in the development of various diseases of civilization.
The most important antioxidants are:
- Vitamines like vitamine A, C en E
- Minerals like selenium and zinc
- Fatty acids such as omega-3 from oily fish
The top three antioxidant fruits are:
- raspberry
- blueberry
- acai
Hopefully this information is helpfull to you!
