Fat is a source of energy (calories), vitamin A, D and E and essential fatty acids (linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid). In a healthy diet is between 20 and 40 percent of the calories from fat. In order to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, it is important to choose for products with a minimum of saturated fat and little or no trans fat.

Fat provides from all the nutrients the most calories per gram. This applies to all types of fat. A high fat diet is therefore usually a high-calorie diet. With an average energy that amounts to a maximum of 80 grams of fat per day for women and 100 grams per day for men.
